Test Name: CD19

Methodology: Flow Cytometry

Test Description

Staining for CD19 detects normal mature and immature B-cells at all stages of maturation, and most normal plasma cells. CD19 is also expressed in most mature B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas, precursor B-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma/leukemia and by the myeloblasts of some acute myeloid leukemias [most characteristically, AML with t(8;21)]. The loss of CD19 expression is a part of the abnormal immunophenotype of a large proportion of plasma cell neoplasms (including MGUS and myeloma).

Specimen Requirements

Testing for this antigen is typically performed as a part of the leukemia/lymphoma screening panel. For customized testing panels including this antigen, please contact the Medical Director of the Flow Cytometry laboratory.

Storage and Transport

Maintain specimen at room temperature. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Use cold pack for transport, making sure cold pack is not in direct contact with specimen.
