Test Name: CD34
Methodology: Flow Cytometry
Staining for CD34 detects progenitor cells, including stem cells, myeloid blasts and early lymphoid progenitors (“stage I hematogones”). It is also expressed by the blasts of most acute myeloid leukemias and precursor B lymphoblastic lymphoma/leukemia, and by 80-85% of cases of precursor T-lymphoblastic lymphoma/leukemia. Acute monoblastic leukemias lack CD34 expression in a large proportion of cases.
Testing for this antigen is typically performed as a part of the leukemia/lymphoma screening panel. For customized testing panels including this antigen, please contact the Medical Director of the Flow Cytometry laboratory.
Storage and Transport
Maintain specimen at room temperature. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Use cold pack for transport, making sure cold pack is not in direct contact with specimen.
