Test Name: CD38
Methodology: Flow Cytometry
Staining for CD38 detects normal plasma cells, activated T-cells and B-cells, precursor B-cells (hematogones) and progenitor cells (blasts). Most plasma cell neoplasms are strongly positive for CD38. Most acute myeloid and lymphoblastic leukemias are also positive for this antigen. CD38 expression in chronic lymphocytic lymphoma is highly correlated with unmutated IGVH genes (“unmutated CLL”) and an unfavorable prognosis.
Testing for this antigen is typically performed as a part of the leukemia/lymphoma screening panel and the plasma cell neoplasm add-on panel. For customized testing panels including this antigen, please contact the Medical Director of the Flow Cytometry laboratory.
Storage and Transport
Maintain specimen at room temperature. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Use cold pack for transport, making sure cold pack is not in direct contact with specimen.
