Test Name: CD4

Methodology: Flow Cytometry

Test Description

Staining for CD4 detects a normal T cell subset (helper/inducer) and is also expressed at lower levels by normal mature and immature monocytes, and by myeloid precursors at the promyelocyte/myelocyte stage. It is also present on normal thymocytes where it may be co-expressed with CD8. The antibody is also expressed on some mature T-cell lymphomas (e.g. anaplastic large cell lymphomas, mycosis fungoides and some peripheral T-cell lymphomas,NOS) and in many of T-lymphoblastic lymphoma/leukemias (where it is often co-expressed with CD8).

Specimen Requirements

Testing for this antigen is typically performed as a part of the leukemia/lymphoma screening panel. For customized testing panels including this antigen, please contact the Medical Director of the Flow Cytometry laboratory.

Storage and Transport

Maintain specimen at room temperature. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Use cold pack for transport, making sure cold pack is not in direct contact with specimen.
