Test Name: CD5
Methodology: Flow Cytometry
Staining for CD5 detects normal T-lymphocytes. It is also expressed at normal or abnormal levels by most mature T-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas and precursor T-cell lymphoblastic lymphomas/leukemias. Dim CD5 expression may be found on some normal B-cell subsets. Additionally, CD5 expression is characteristically present in some subsets of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma, including chronic lymphoid leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma, mantle cell lymphoma and less commonly, some marginal zone lymphomas and lymphoplasmacytic lymphomas.
Testing for this antigen is typically performed as a part of the leukemia/lymphoma screening panel. For customized testing panels including this antigen, please contact the Medical Director of the Flow Cytometry laboratory.
