Test Name: CD56

Methodology: IHC

Test Description

CD56 is expressed in the membrane of normal NK cells and subsets of CD8+ cytotoxic T-cells, as well as on normal cells of neural origin. Partial, weak CD56 expression may also be detected in subsets of normal plasma cells and on immature myeloid and monocytic cells in regenerative (reactive) processes. CD56 expression is present on a large variety of hematopoietic neoplasms, including T-cell lymphomas, B- and T-lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma, NK and T-large granular lymphocyte proliferations, acute myeloid leukemias, plasma cell neoplasms (MGUS, myeloma) and plasmacytoid dendritic cells neoplasms. CD56 is also expressed on neural and neuroendocrine neoplasms (e.g. neuroblastoma, small cell carcinoma).

Specimen Requirements

A formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue block is preferred specimen type or one (1) unbaked, unstained slide cut at 4-5 microns for H&E staining (required) and two to three (2-3) positively charged unstained slides cut at 3-4 microns for each test/antibody ordered.

Storage and Transport

Use cold pack during transport of paraffin blocks and unstained slides. Cold pack should not be placed in direct contact with the specimen during shipping
